Having a formal Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution policy is important to help assure increased access and utilization of a potential life saving intervention.*

Best Practices for Naloxone Prescribing ​​​


​For persons diagnosed with Opioid Overdose, Opioid Substance Use Disorder or at high risk for OD

  1. Integrate information about state-wide (regional) standing orders for Naloxone (if available) in discharge instructions
  2. Provide Instructions on naloxone use and LIMITATIONS 
  3. Providing a separate prescription may aid obtainment
  4. Provide Naloxone Kits when available
  5. Encourage other care givers to obtain Naloxone and understand administration and limits
